Volunteer Stream Monitoring

Under the leadership of DRBA’s Vice President, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Virginia Save Our Streams staff, and volunteers, we have trained staff and volunteers in water quality monitoring methods. We have held monitoring events specifically targeted to children with classroom and field activities that reached approximately 2,500 students in Patrick and Henry counties. In addition, DRBA has participated in a number of festivals displaying our “critter pond” and monitoring equipment.

Currently, we plan to provide teacher and volunteer workshops to provide training in stream monitoring, as well as to schedule meetings with school boards to incorporate stream monitoring and Trout in the Classroom into the schools’ curricula in ways that could help students achieve higher Standards of Learning (SOL) scores.

Read the article linked above and use the contacts shown to volunteer as a stream monitor. Volunteer, today! You'll be making a difference and enjoying fellowship of like minded people while you're experiencing the resource, up close and personal!

DRBA has been designated by the State of North Carolina as a Stream Watch Group and has initiated stream watch activities on the Dan River and its tributaries in North Carolina and Virginia. (Read details)
