Martinsville-Henry County
Rivers and Trails
Group
|
| |
|
The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and
Trails Group, an affiliate of the Dan River
Basin Association, consists of local
volunteers who are establishing recreational
trails and river access points in our
section of Southern Virginia. Our mission is
to protect, promote, and enhance the natural
and historical resources of Martinsville and
Henry County through environmental
education, recreational activities and
tourism, and land conservation and
revitalization. Our work has been made
possible through the generosity of the
Harvest Foundation in Martinsville,
Virginia, which has provided funding for
staff and operations in Martinsville and
Henry County. To learn more about the

Smith River
Fieldale Trail |
The
planned Smith River Fieldale Trail begins at 3521 South River Road in
Fieldale, Virginia. The first phase of the multiuse
trail, designed for
pedestrians and cyclists, follows the Smith River
upstream for approximately one mile, ending at the entrance to the
Fieldcrest Lodge. An additional mile and a half of trial, following the
Smith River downstream from the trailhead, is currently under
development and will be completed by Spring 2009. Funding for the development of the
Fieldale Trail has been provided by Dominion Power and the Virginia
Department of Forestry. |

River
Access Points |
The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and
Trails Group is working with county officials
to develop a number of
public river access points along the Smith and Mayo rivers. The
goal is to make it easier for fishermen, professional outfitters, and
amateur paddlers-both local and visitors-to enjoy the recreational
opportunities on the rivers. The access points will be designed for
putting in and taking out non-motorized boats such as kayaks, canoes,
johnboats, and rafts.On the Smith
River, the accesses will begin at an existing entry point at the base of
Philpott Dam and continue in regular intervals throughout Henry County
and into North Carolina. Access points on the North Mayo and South Mayo
rivers are envisioned in the southern part of Henry County to connect to
the new Mayo River State Park in North Carolina. |

Rail Trail |
|
The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and
Trails Group is assisting Henry County with the planning and
construction of a 4.5 mile trail along the Danville and Western Rail
Line formerly owned by Norfolk-Southern Railway. The planned multiuse
trail will stretch from Fieldale to Martinsville, terminating at Prillaman Chemical Company, which is no longer in operation. The
paved trail, designed for walking and biking, will connect to the
existing Spur Trail in Uptown Martinsville. Construction on the project,
funded by a Federal Transportation
Enhancement Grant secured by Congressman Rick Boucher will begin in
Spring 2009. The group is excited about its development and
already hopes to expand it in the future. |
