Martinsville-Henry County
Rivers and Trails Group

The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group, an affiliate of the Dan River Basin Association, consists of local volunteers who are establishing recreational trails and river access points in our section of Southern Virginia. Our mission is to protect, promote, and enhance the natural and historical resources of Martinsville and Henry County through environmental education, recreational activities and tourism, and land conservation and revitalization. Our work has been made possible through the generosity of the Harvest Foundation in Martinsville, Virginia, which has provided funding for staff and operations in Martinsville and Henry County.  To learn more about the Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group and its projects, click on the following links or contact us drba.va@danriver.org

Smith River Fieldale Trail
The planned Smith River Fieldale Trail will start at the Upper Smith River Water and Sewer Lifting Station in Fieldale and follow the Smith River upstream for approximately one mile, ending at the entrance to the Fieldcrest Lodge. The Demonstration trail will be a multiuse trail designed for biking and walking. Funding for the development of the Demonstration Trail has been provided by Dominion Power and the Virginia Department of Forestry. The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group hopes to celebrate the trail's grand opening soon.

River Access Points
The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group is working with county officials to develop a number of public river access points along the Smith and Mayo rivers. The goal is to make it easier for fishermen, professional outfitters, and amateur paddlers-both local and visitors-to enjoy the recreational opportunities on the rivers. The access points will be designed for putting in and taking out non-motorized boats such as kayaks, canoes, johnboats, and rafts.

On the Smith River, the accesses will begin at an existing entry point at the base of Philpott Dam and continue in regular intervals throughout Henry County and into North Carolina. Access points on the North Mayo and South Mayo rivers are envisioned in the southern part of Henry County to connect to the new Mayo River State Park in North Carolina.

Rail Trail
The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group is assisting Henry County with the planning and construction of a 7.5 mile trail along the Danville and Western Rail Line currently owned by Norfolk-Southern Railway. The planned multiuse trail would stretch from Fieldale to Martinsville, terminating at Prillaman Chemical Company, which is no longer in operation. The trail will be designed for walking and biking, and a Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant secured by Congressman Rick Boucher will enable the project to get started. Although the rail trail is still very much in its planning phase, the group is excited about its development and already hopes to expand it in the future.
