Martinsville-Henry County
Rivers and Trails Group

Partners
In addition to its membership within the Dan River Basin Association, other groups have also provided assistance over the last year as the Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group has grown from a temporary committee to a permanent community organization.

Southern Environmental Law Center
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) works in six states to use the power of the law to conserve clean water, healthy air, wild lands, and livable communities throughout the Southeast. Part of the organization’s mission and goals is to empower local communities to make proactive steps towards protecting the environment. In our case, they sent Kay Slaughter, a senior attorney and former mayor, to help organize the committee that would later become the Martinsville- Henry County Rivers and Trails Group.

The Harvest Foundation

The Harvest Foundation funds local efforts and is dedicated to making Martinsville and Henry County the residence of choice by enhancing opportunities and quality of life for all its citizens. The foundation has provided the Martinsville- Henry County Rivers and Trails Group technical assistance, meeting arrangements, as well as funding for a staff member and trail development.

County of Henry, Virginia
Henry County has assisted the Martinsville- Henry County Rivers and Trails Group significantly by providing office space and technical support for staff as well as assisting with the purchase of the Danville and Western Rail Line and other local properties for trail and river access development.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation &
Virginia Foundation for Humanities
The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group has worked closely with the Martinsville and Henry County Rural Heritage Development Initiative of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Fayette Area Historic Initiative Oral History project through the Virginia Foundation for Humanities.
