In addition to its membership
within the Dan River Basin Association, other groups have
also provided assistance over the last year as the
Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and Trails Group has grown
from a temporary committee to a permanent community
organization. |

Activate Martinsville/Henry County helps
make the community a fun, healthy, and
desirable place to live by promoting
walking, bicycling and increased physical
activity as a part of everyday life.
Activate partners with the Dan River Basin
Association to promote the use of area
trails as a part of a healthy lifestyle. |

Henry County has assisted the Martinsville-
Henry County Rivers and Trails Group significantly by providing office
space and technical support for staff as well as assisting with the
purchase of the Danville and Western Rail Line and other local
properties for trail and river access development. |

Southern Environmental Law Center |
|
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC)
works in six states to use the power of the law to conserve clean water,
healthy air, wild lands, and livable communities throughout the
Southeast. Part of the organization’s mission and goals is to empower
local communities to make proactive steps towards protecting the
environment. In our case, they sent Kay Slaughter, a senior attorney and
former mayor, to help organize the committee that would later become the
Martinsville- Henry County Rivers and Trails Group. |

Friends of
Philpott, Inc. |
|
Friends of Philpott strives to provide
environmentally responsible use, development, and protection of the
natural and recreational resources at Philpott Lake through community
involvement and education. They partner with the Dan River Basin
Association to coordinate development of trails around Philpott Lake and
along the Smith River. |

The Harvest Foundation |
|
The Harvest Foundation funds local efforts
and is dedicated to making Martinsville and Henry County the residence
of choice by enhancing opportunities and quality of life for all its
citizens. The foundation has provided the Martinsville- Henry County
Rivers and Trails Group technical assistance, meeting arrangements, as
well as funding for a staff member and trail development. |

The Martinsville-Henry County Rivers and
Trails Group has worked closely with the Martinsville and Henry County
Rural Heritage Development Initiative of the National Trust for Historic
Preservation and the Fayette Area Historic Initiative Oral History
project through the Virginia Foundation for Humanities. |
