Dan River, Rockingham County, NC- Lindsey Bridge Road Access

West on US 311 2 1/2 miles from Madison, turn south on Lindsey Bridge Road (SR1138) one mile to Lindsey Bridge. Access is on right under bridge.
Rural scenery and beginner rapids make this a pleasant section for a river outing. About 2 miles from the put in are remains of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad Bridge (1889). Just above the take out is a stone pier of the Madison Covered Bridge (1888).

Dan River, Rockingham County, NC- Hwy 704 Access

Across NC 704 Bridge into Madison. Follow signs to access under bridge. Access is on right under bridge.

Wilderness experience part 1: At 1/4 mile from the put in the Mayo river enters from river left. One half mile later, the river passes under US Hwy 220. From that point until the take out there are no bridges, roads, or buildings visible from the River. At Slink Shoal (1/4 mile past US 220 bridge) the river makes an interesting run through a long rock-lined sluice and a series of wingdams built by the Corps of Engineers in the 1880's. Throughout this and the following section are remains of bateau navigation structures and Native American fish traps.

Dan River, Rockingham County, NC- Settles Bridge

From Settles Bridge Road (SR 2145): 1/4 mile south of the bridge turn east on Dan River Road. Access in on the left at the end of the road.

Wilderness experience part 2: For the first ten miles of this section there are two bridges, but no roads or buildings visible from the river. About 1 1/2 miles downstream from the put in is Eagle Falls island, the original site of Jackson Town. The route to the left of the island goes through a wing dam and a sluice (c. 1820's and 1880's), while the route to the right features shoals with an interesting series of drops. Over the next 3 miles the river makes a 180 degree turn from due east to due west known as the "Bent." Harrington Highway Bridge at mile 8 features a nice little Class II drop. Mile 10 features the bateau port Leaksville Landing (c. 1820's) and the graceful arch of the old Hwy 87 Bridge (c. 1922). One half mile past the bridge is the massive stone pier of the Leaksville Covered Bridge (1852), which should be run on the right. The Smith river joins from the left about 1/4 mile before the take out.

Dan River, Rockingham County, NC- Boat Landing (Wildlife Access)


Location:
From NC 14 at the Dan River turn west on Harrington Highway (toward NC 87, 135, & 770) Go 1/2 mile. Turn right on Bethleham Church Road (SR 2039) The NC Wildlife Access is 1/2 mile on right.
Description:
There are no public access sites between the Boat Landing (Wildlife Access) and Danville, Va. A half mile bellow the put in is the double arched Mebane's Bridge (1924), which was the object of a contract suit that is widely studied in law schools today. Two miles past the put in is the Duke Power steam plant dam. The portage trail is on the right side opposite the steam plant. Just below the dam is the area where Lower Sauratown Indian village was.

Some Class I rapids are located three miles further down at the NC 700 Bridge. From the NC 700 Bridge to the North Carolina-Virginia border the river passes through a highly scenic wilderness area. Several of the tributary streams feature Triassic conglomerate formations nearly 200 million years old.

The river features Class I and II shoals and rapids with picturesque names--Widemouth, Beasley's Gallows, Tanyard, and Devil's Jump. Navigation structures built in the 1880s and prehistoric fish dams are scattered through this section.

The Berry Hill-State Line Bridge is about 6 miles below NC 700, and Danville is another 17 miles downstream.

Dan River, Rockingham County, NC- Hamilton Street Access

North on Highway 87 towards Eden. Cross 87 bridge at Dan River and turn left into parking lot.

From NC 14 at the Dan River, turn west on Harrington Highway (toward NC 87, 35, 770). Turn right on NC 87, Hamilton Street. Cross 87 bridge at Dan River and turn left into parking lot.
