DAN RIVER BASIN ASSOCIATION SCHEDULES SCENIC STOKES COUNTY FLOATJune 1 Outing, Moratock Park to Hemlock Golf Course The Dan River Basin Association's First Saturday Outing on June 1 will be a 9-mile scenic float on Dan River from Moratock Park to Hemlock Golf Course Access in Stokes County, NC. Meeting at 10:00 a.m. at the park in Danbury (GPS 36.408055, -80.198286), participants will set the shuttle and launch at the public access point. Boat rentals and shuttle will be available at Three Rivers Outfitters of Eden, 336-627-6215, www.3-R-O.com. Coordinator for the trip is Will Truslow, past president of DRBA and an experienced kayaker. Truslow says, "We will be on a less-traveled but beautiful part of the Dan, and the longer daylight this time of year allows us to enjoy a longer trip." Rated as Class 1 in difficulty, this part of the river has high forested bluffs that make it particularly striking. In addition to early summer wildflowers and blossoming trees, paddlers may see animal trails, herons, geese, and songbirds.History and legend abound on this part of the river. The outing begins near the historic 1843 Moratock Iron Furnace in Moratock Park. The furnace made iron for the Confederacy until the dam that fed water to it was destroyed in 1865 on the same day that Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Built by Native Americans and later residents to capture fish on their spawning runs, vee-shaped fish weirs are found in the river bed. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, branches of the Great Wagon Road forded the river on shallow shoals. A later means of crossing the river is marked by the steel skeleton of the 1918 Pitzer Truss Bridge, just upstream of modern Dodgetown Bridge. A fish dam a quarter mile below features a rare wooden slat fish trap at the apex of a stone fish weir.Uncommon Carolina Hemlock stands grace the Dan River Cliffs natural heritage area. Riverside caves in the cliffs are said to have been used by Confederate draft dodgers. Most striking is Davis Bluff, the scene of a fatal fall, also known as Mount Horrible, marked by huge boulders in the river at the base of the precipice. This portion of the Dan River is rated mostly as Class 1, but the remains of a former Duke Power dam, dynamited in 1975, create a sometimes challenging Class 2 rapid. Fortunately, this final rapid is within sight of the take-out ramp. Participants in the outing should supply boat, paddles, life jackets, drinks, snacks and lunch, wear water-shedding artificial fabric or wool, and be prepared to get wet. All participants will be asked to sign a waiver. To reach Moratock Park traveling on NC 8/89, turn onto Sheppard Mill Road, crossing the bridge over the Dan. At the end of the bridge, turn left into the parking lot to unload boats and gear for launching at the beach.DRBA invites the public to join in, free of charge. For questions about the outing, contact Will Truslow, 336-547-1903, willtruslow@hotmail.com.

<!--[if gte mso 9]> 12.00 <![endif]-->Adoptable dogs in the Rockingham County Animal Shelter in Wentworth are about to have their day—or at least some time outside in nature, thanks to scores of volunteers, REI, Rockingham County, the Dan River Basin Association (DRBA), and more. On Friday, March 15, from 1:00 – 1:30 p.m., the new Rockingham County Animal Shelter Trail will be dedicated by members of the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners and formally opened to the public. Refreshments will be served, and parking will be at the Animal Shelter, 250 Cherokee Camp Road, Reidsville, NC. In addition to a variety of other trails, the Dan River Basin Association builds a unique type of trail specifically to benefit shelter dogs. It is a natural fit. Walking trails provide a serene place to let dogs do what they do best—sniff the ground and romp with an attentive human by their side. “County shelters are an often overlooked but ideal place to build wooded trails,” says Jenny Edwards, DRBA’s Rockingham County Program Manager. “Shelter dogs are more adoptable if they are exercised and socialized. Well-designed trails attract volunteers and offer opportunities to get dogs outside away from the noisy, stressful shelter environment. And it's an easy volunteer activity for busy people. You get your exercise at the same time you're giving back." Prior to working with DRBA, Ms. Edwards was the Executive Director of the SPCA of the Triad where she implemented a popular and long-running shelter dog walking program at local parks. “This great for everyone—people, dogs—we all need fresh air and exercise to be healthy and happy,” Ms. Edwards says. In addition to this trail in Rockingham County, DRBA also constructed a walking trail for the Animal Protection Society in Caswell County. The Rockingham County Animal Shelter Trail was built almost entirely by volunteers, who logged about 300 hours working with the Dan River Basin Association. The ¼ mile natural surface woodland trail links the Animal Shelter and the Governmental Center. The new trail is located within a few minutes of 3,000 residents and 2,000 Rockingham Community College students and within 30 minutes of approximately 250,000 residents of Greensboro, North Carolina. Construction of the trail was made possible with grant funding from REI and other support from Rockingham Community College faculty and students, Rockingham County Soil and Water District, UMAR at the Roc, Animal Shelter staff and volunteers, Prillaman Landscape Dimensions, Friends of Chinqua-Penn Trail, ROTC students from Rockingham County High School, Rockingham County staff, and DRBA members. Grant funding also provided for the purchase of special harnesses for shelter dogs to make the walking experience more enjoyable for volunteers. DRBA is grateful to REI, an industry leader in outdoor recreation gear, sporting goods and clothing. In addition to helping the community build a desired trail, REI funding helped DRBA broaden its volunteer base for working on other trails in Rockingham County. DRBA oversaw trail design and recruited and trained volunteers on trail construction. UMAR at the Roc built and installed a wooden walkway near the trail entrance at the Governmental Center. In addition to dog walking programs, the Animal Shelter Trail is expected to be popular with county government employees and with local residents seeking safe and managed places to walk. Free parking for the trail is available at the Animal Shelter and the Governmental Center. The trail is a pilot project of Rockingham County Pathways, a county-wide master plan for recreational trails made possible by the Reidsville Area Foundation, local municipalities, Piedmont Triad Regional Council, and DRBA members. More information about Pathways is available at http://www.rockinghamcountytrails.org/. <!--[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]> <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0in; mso-para-margin-right:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0in; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} <![endif]-->

Visit Reynolds Homestead Guided Hike and Tours on February 2

Visit Reynolds Homestead Guided Hike and Tours on February 2 The Dan River Basin Association's First Saturday Outing on February 2, 2013 will be a visit to Reynolds Homestead in Critz, Virginia, including a one-mile loop hike and tours of the historic house and grounds. Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the entrance to the Continuing Education Center at Reynolds Homestead (GPS 36.640596, -80.146542), to begin the day's activities. An outreach campus of Virginia Tech, Reynolds Homestead features the birthplace and boyhood home of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds and a Forest Resources Research Center in the midst of 780 acres of fields and woodlands."The Reynolds Homestead and forestry practices hike is easily DRBA's most popular and best attended hiking outing," according to DRBA Board member and trip coordinator, Wayne Kirkpatrick. Since DRBA's last visit to the site two years ago, significant changes have occurred along the Forestry Management walking trail. Managed forests demonstrate old and young stands of loblolly pines, a native grass field managed for wildlife, and research ponds that provide wildlife habitat. Along the way hikers will see the historic spring that inspired the name, Rock Spring Plantation, of this 18th century tobacco estate near the face of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Views from the trail include the nearest peak, the curiously named No Business Mountain, so called, according to tradition, because visitors had "no business" looking for the family still. In 2010 two major improvements were made at the Homestead. The African American Cemetery was enhanced with plantings, grave markings, fencing, signage, and a walkway for visitors. A new gateway entrance was dedicated in October, 2012 honoring the tobacco and aluminum foil legacy of the Reynolds family. Visitors to the Continuing Education Center can view drawings of planned renovations to the Center. In addition, a log tobacco barn was reconstructed near the trail from materials salvaged from three early barns, including the one on site. The barn will help interpret the history of tobacco growing and curing that formed the foundation of the Reynolds family fortune. Afternoon tours of the state and national landmark historic site will be offered at a cost of $3.00 per adult and $2.00 per student, payable to the tour guide. Built in 1843, the two-story brick home was restored in 1970 to its nineteenth century state and includes many of the original family furnishings. The son of Hardin and Nancy Reynolds, R. J. Reynolds was born here in 1853. In 1874 he moved to Winston, North Carolina and established a tobacco factory, which grew to a multi-million-dollar company. When he died in 1918 at the age of 65, he was the wealthiest man in North Carolina. The grounds feature several outbuildings, including a log icehouse and log granary, a brick milk house, and a brick kitchen. In the kitchen hangs a picture of Kitty Reynolds, a slave who tradition says saved Hardin Reynolds's life by distracting a raging bull. In 1880 a landmark U. S. Supreme Court decision resulting from the flawed murder trials of two of her sons guaranteed protection of legal rights of former slaves.Participants in the outing should supply drinks and lunch, wear hiking boots and layers of water-shedding artificial fabric or wool, and be prepared for rain or wind. All participants will be asked to sign a waiver. Reynolds Homestead is located at 463 Homestead Lane, Critz, Virginia. From Martinsville, travel west on US 58 for about twenty miles. Turn right onto Abram Penn Highway (Rt. 626), indicated by the second of two brown signs. Drive about three miles and bear left onto Homestead Lane. Parking is at the end of the short road. From Stuart, travel east on US 58 for about nine miles. Turn left onto Abram Penn Highway (Rt. 626), indicated by a brown sign.
Any chance you feel like braving December winds on the Little River? The 30th annual Sprig Outing will be held, river conditions permitting, December 1, 2012, on the Upper Little River, tributary of the Cape Fear River, near Lillington, North Carolina, in Harnett County. The leader of the trip will be Scott Sauer, Harnett County Manager (sauerkayaker@gmail.com). The river is flat, with one slightly challenging Class 1+ rapid, easy or tricky depending on water level. It can be portaged. Participants are asked to meet at Hardee's, in Lillington, at 10:00 a.m. December 1, dressed in layers of warm winter clothes, preferably wool and polypropylene, and bringing lunch, water, boat and life jacket. We'll caravan to a private farm, put in, travel upstream as we gather sprigs, stop for lunch by a musical rapid and float back downstream to the take-out -- well before dark. "The aim of the trip, aside from good fun and celebration of the Blessed Season, is to garner luscious sprigs of mistletoe, which grow profusely along swamp rivers such as the Upper Little River," said Forrest Altman (forrestaltman@mebtel.net, 336-234-8556), who has been 'sprigging' on the river most Decembers for the past 30 years. "The mistletoe gathering goes best when paddlers in a tandem canoe 'thwart' with other boats to form a platform. The bow paddler holds to something stable on the bank; each boater holds to the next boat, and the stern paddler or some other boater in the group wields a tree pruning hook or other pole with a hook to reach and pull down a sprig of ripe mistletoe," said Altman. "Part of the fun is in the cooperation, as the pole passes from one boater to another, depending on who has the best position under the luscious bough. Cheers go up as the beautiful sprig lands in someone's boat instead of in the water, where it will sink quickly." To reach Hardee's in Lillington from Greensboro, take U. S. 421 to Lillington. At the first traffic signal in Lillington, turn right on US 401. Hardees will be one block south on the right. From Durham take NC 55 to Fuquay-Varina and then U. S, 401. After crossing the Cape Fear River and negotiating the first traffic signal, look for Hardee's on the right hand side of Highway 401. From Raleigh take U. S. 1 or U. S. 401. Please contact Scott Sauer (sauerkayaker@gmail.com) or Forrest Altmann (forrestaltman@mebtel.net, 336-234-8556) to let them know you plan to attend.

Open House - Rockingham County Recreational Trails

THIS MAY BE YOUR LAST CHANCE TO HAVE INPUT ON THE ROCKINGHAM PATHWAYS PLAN!Proximity to trails is the #1 community amenity sought by prospective homeowners (National Association of Homebuilders Survey, 2008) and has been shown to draw employers to an area. In addition to economic growth, trails provide valuable recreational opportunities and may help reduce the obesity epidemic facing the County. Thirty-Three (33%) of Rockingham County adults are obese compared with 29% for North Carolina (CDC, 2011 and CountyHealthRankings.org). Whether you would like a trail in your neighborhood to improve your land value or reduce health issues we want your opinion reflected in the future of Rockingham County. Join us at a public meeting near you to provide input on the draft of the Rockingham Pathways Plan and learn more about implementing trails near you. The Rockingham Pathways plan is an effort by trail advocates and local governments to improve economic viability, protect open spaces, and improve the health of citizens. The trails are being developed through public private partnerships based on the belief that the first step to conservation is appreciation and the first step of economic growth is improving quality of life for residents. The time to review the plan and voice your ideas and concerns are: • November 5th Western Rockingham, 5-7pm at the Madison-Mayodan Recreation Center 300 S. Second Avenue Mayodan, NC• November 8th Reidsville, 6-8pm at City Hall 230 W. Morehead Street Reidsville, NC• November 13th Eden, 5-7pm at City Hall 308 E.
Dan River Basin Association to Paddle Hyco River November 3DRBA Continues Celebrating 10th Anniversary YearOn Saturday, November 3, the Dan River Basin Association (DRBA) invites you to float the Hyco River to its confluence with the Dan River in Halifax County, Virginia. The organization's First Saturday Outing will paddle about six miles roundtrip from a public access point to the mouth of the river just above Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake). Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Hyco River Access 8 miles east of South Boston, VA on US Highway 58 (GPS 36.6671892, -78.7552437). Boat rentals may be arranged through Three Rivers Outfitters of Eden, 336-627-6215, www.3-R-O.com. The trip, rated Class I, is suitable for novice paddlers. The Hyco River is the easternmost of the five major tributaries of the Dan River. During 2012, in celebration of DRBA's tenth anniversary year, river outings have ranged from far upstream at Lake Talbott and Kibler Valley near the Blue Ridge Mountains to this area 200 miles downstream near the mouth of the Dan. Here, according to board member Paul Johnson, retired director of Halifax County-South Boston Regional Library, "the terrain varies from a typical Piedmont stream with high banks and rocky outcroppings on river right, to a swampy wetland with low banks and wide vistas."After lunch at the mouth of the Hyco River, Johnson continues, "if lake levels allow," participants will enter the Dan River where "we can then explore the islands that stretch to the northern shore of the lake." This area, now called Hyco Flats, was once the site of extensive rapids known as Hyco Falls. In his Civil War memoir, Adrift in Dixie, William Estabrook wrote that the river was "boiling and leaping over the ragged rocks, which showed their black backs in a whirlpool of tormented water." Johnson's description of Hyco Flats is vastly different today. "On a scouting trip to the now-silent falls, I encountered several blue herons, an egret, many songbirds, and a large number of slider turtles."Coordinating the outing is DRBA's past president and avid paddler, Wayne Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick looks forward to the trip, noting that DRBA last floated the Hyco River in the summer of 2004.Participants in the outing are asked to bring boat, a life jacket for each boater, lunch, and water. Dress in layers of synthetic (quick-drying) fabric or wool, and be prepared for wind or rain. All participants are asked to sign a waiver. To reach the put-in, travel eight miles east of South Boston, Virginia, on US Highway 58 (Bill Tuck Highway) to Hyco Landing Public Recreational Area. The access point is on the south side of the highway. Outings and meetings of the Dan River Basin Association are open to the public without charge. For trip information, contact trip coordinator Wayne Kirkpatrick, wynbtyk@embarqmail.com, 540-570-3511 or 276-694-4449.

First Saturday Outing NC Big Sweep Cleanup You're invited to join in DRBA's October 6 First Saturday Outing on the Smith River in Eden. Covering the last two miles of the Smith will complete the cleanup of the river begun in August. Meeting at 10:00 a.m. at Island Ford Landing, West Meadow Road, Eden, NC (GPS 36.502168, -79.756086), we'll float to the confluence of the Smith with the Dan River, taking out at the Eden Wildlife Access, locally known as "the Boat Landing," a popular Dan River access point beside Bethlehem Church Road.Three Rivers Outfitters, 336-627-6215 or www.3-R-O.com, will offer boat rentals and shuttle for the float.Coordinated by T Butler, the cleanup is part of the North Carolina Big Sweep watershed cleanup held each fall. As former Rockingham County coordinator for Big Sweep, Butler has organized retrieval of several tons of debris from the county's waterways and roadsides over many years of service. "DRBA has participated in river cleanups for over a decade," she notes, "and we have a great record of volunteer service in keeping our rivers clean and healthy. In addition to the satisfaction of doing the cleanup, we always have fun on the river with each other as we do it."DRBA joined other nonprofits in Henry County, Virginia, in retrieving over 8 tons of trash from 30 miles of the Smith River in August, in addition to pulling out a record-breaking 690 tires. "Because of the terrific job the volunteers did upstream," Butler says, "we should have a much easier task in the river's last two miles."Although the river flows through the City of Eden, high forested banks hide many of the homes and businesses and provide a pleasant getaway. Gravel bars may generate riffles, but the river tends to be shallow and easy to navigate. The entire trip is rated Class 1 in difficulty.Island Ford Landing is located at the Meadow Road trailhead of the Eden Smith River Greenway. The public access point was officially opened in August, 2009, at the site where Colonial travelers on the road from Salem, North Carolina to Petersburg, Virginia crossed the Smith River.Cornerstones of DRBA's mission are education, recreation, and stewardship of our resources. At Island Ford Access, MillerCoors Brewery partnered with DRBA on a reforestation project to protect the river by capturing runoff from the picnic shelter and parking lot.Meet at 10:00 a. m. at Island Ford Landing, West Meadow Road, Eden, NC. Please bring boat, life jacket, plenty of fluids, and lunch. Dress in layers of synthetic fabric or wool; wear work gloves and close-toed shoes. North Carolina Big Sweep will provide trash bags for the cleanup. Although the trip is not technically demanding or hazardous, boaters will be asked to sign a waiver.DIRECTIONS: To reach the put-in, take NC 14 to Eden, North Carolina. Turn west on Meadow Road (NC 770/NC 700). Go through one traffic light at Stadium Drive. Following the sign to Island Ford Landing, turn left just before crossing the bridge over the Smith River. The small parking lot is beside the picnic shelter.Contact Information: T Butler, 336-613-6723, or members@danriver.org.

Paddle-In Picnic Saturday, July 14, 2012, at Staunton River State Park.

Paddle-In Picnic Saturday, July 14, 2012, 10:00am - 05:00pm We are planning our next Upper Reach and the UR Loons monthly outing for July 14th at Staunton River State Park. Our thoughts were that folks can paddle in from various directions and convene on the picnic beach for an afternoon of casual wet fun and camping for those that desire to make a weekend of it. The objective is to get everyone feeling like one large extended Roanoke River Basin Family so that we tune in to each other's event schedules and promote what we all love to do. If we can muster a big enough turnout we'd like to make it an annual event and maybe host it in honor of Nancy and Bill Trout for their lifelong work on Virginia Rivers (if that is appropriate). We'll have our Frog Hollow - Lake Country Outpost folks there offering some safety instruction on deep water rescue and paddle some of the flats around the park. We'll provide the Fire & Ice (hot grills and ice) and everyone bring their own hot dogs, beverages, etc. Some folks are planning to camp and we'll have a couple of trailers to help shuttle folks back to cars.
