Understanding Conservation Easements in NC

April 21, 2026
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

We will talk about the basics of land conservation and get into the details of the different types of tools a land trust can use to conserve land with a focus on conservation easements – what they are, how they work, benefits (environmental and financial) and how landowners can decide if a conservation easement might be right for them. About PLC: Piedmont Land Conservancy is a regional land trust working in nine Piedmont North Carolina counties, including Alamance, Caswell, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Yadkin, Forsyth, Guilford and Randolph. PLC protects our region’s natural lands, family farms, and waters for the benefit of all living things through land protection, stewardship of conserved spaces, and connecting people with nature. Established in 1990, PLC has protected more than 33,000 acres of land by working with willing landowners and partners. About Palmer McIntyre: Growing up spending summers on the family farm in Ashe County, North Carolina fostered Palmer’s love for nature. She first joined the Piedmont Land Conservancy in 1996 as the Program Manager, and has held various positions since then, including Executive Director, Board Member, and now, as a part-time Conservation Planner. Palmer also leads the NC Great Trails State Coalition, a group advocating for state funding to advance trails across North Carolina. Palmer has a Masters of Regional Planning from UNC Chapel Hill. Palmer and her husband have three college age children, and she enjoys hiking, gardening, and spending time on their Ashe County farm, which is forever protected by a conservation easement.
