Terry
Painter, one of DRBA’s most experienced paddlers, will coordinate an 11-mile
float on the Staunton
River, a favorite
scenic and historic river.
Painter, a history buff, can tell stories of the area’s
early settlement and river traffic. In
the nineteenth century, flat-bottomed batteaux navigated
the river through wing dams and sluices built to deepen and channel the
water. Some of these navigational
structures as well as tow paths for mules and human beings can still be seen
on the Staunton. This section is described in guidebooks as
Class 1-2 in difficulty, suitable for novice paddlers accompanied by
experienced river leaders. It provides
steady rapids and scenery and is Southside Virginia’s most celebrated whitewater
trip.
This
and other Third Saturday Outings are provided as a DRBA member benefit.
