This public
non-motorized boat ramp behind Bassett
Furniture Co. has convenient parking. The
next public access is 6 miles downstream at
Fieldale. In this relatively urban portion
of the Smith River, paddlers will view what
remains of a once vibrant furniture
manufacturing industry along the river’s
banks in Bassett and Stanleytown. This
section, features Native American fish weirs
and 19th-century batteau navigation
structures, visible at low water. Another
point of interest is Hordsville estate built
by George “Old Rusty” Hairston II, the
originator and president of the Smith’s
River Navigation Company, in 1836.
Water levels
are subject to rapid change due to releases
from Philpott Dam. Paddlers should check
USGS gauges and call (276) 629-2432 for a
release schedule. |
