RIVER INFO/Access Points/Smith
River |
| |
|
|
|
|
|
This section of
the Smith River requires a release of water
from the Philpott dam for paddling. A
public, non-motorized boat ramp is located
at the base of Philpott Dam with parking,
restrooms, and campground. The next public
access is 6 miles downstream at Bassett
Furniture Co. This section of river is
scenic and a favorite spot for fishing.
Paddlers should keep an eye out for blooming
rhododendron and mountain laurel in early
summer.
Paddlers should
be aware that the entrance ramp is rustic
and that water levels are subject to rapid
change due to releases from Philpott Dam.
Water temperature is cold (39-41 degrees)
year round. Paddlers should call (276)
629-2432 for a release schedule and be sure
there is time to complete the run before the
dam release is cut off. |
