Help Build a Trail @ Friends of Eden Animal Rescue

Volunteer & Help Build a recreational Trail for Shelter Dogs in Eden

Life for shelter dogs in Eden is about to get a little better. Friends of Eden Animal Rescue and Dan River Basin Association (DRBA) are teaming up to build a natural surface walking trail for volunteer dog walkers on property near the Dan River owned by the City of Eden. The trail is made possible with financial support from Rockingham County Community Foundation with funding provided by Duke Energy. Other support comes from Reidsville Area Foundation, House of Health Eden, CrossFit Eden, City of Eden, Eden Rivers & Trails Group, and DRBA members. It is the 4th animal shelter trail inspired by the Dan River Basin Association. Other DRBA-built shelter trails are located at Caswell County Animal Shelter, Rockingham County Animal Shelter, and Martinsville (Va.) Animal Shelter.

Friends of Eden Animal Rescue and DRBA are seeking volunteers to help finish out the trail on March 10th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The effort includes a dog food drive for the shelter. Anyone wishing to donate can drop dog food off at 1050 Klyce Street, Eden, NC during those hours. Trail volunteers will receive a free DRBA "Tails on Trails" T shirt. Water and snacks also provided.

The trail has a real-world positive impact too. According to Lisa Haraway Goldsworthy, Board Member , Friends of Eden Animal Rescue: "Studies have shown that socialization and exercise have been positively correlated to increased adoption rates for shelter dogs. We expect that this trail will inspire people to come volunteer to give a dog a walk in the woods down to the beautiful Dan River, and in doing so, give those dogs a better chance to find loving homes. We are very excited about this project and appreciate all the organizations that have stepped up in support of it. We are looking forward to the volunteer day and food drive on March 10th and finishing up the trail."

Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes and dress for the weather. Trail work will be led by Tony McGee, a professional landscape architect who specializes in sustainable trails as community development through place-making and design.
