See an Environmental Problem? Who to Call!

 

Tip: When reporting, include the location, date and time, what you observed, the apparent source if known, what was affected and photographs if you can safely take them.

 


In Virginia
For an environmental emergency:

Call 911 if there is an immediate threat to people or the environment.
Call the Virginia Emergency Operations Center: 804-750-8845. This is the 24-hour number for significant pollution incidents such as spills, fish kills, hazardous-material releases or other imminent threats.
For a non-emergency pollution concern:

Report it through the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Pollution Reporting system. DEQ accepts reports involving pollution affecting air, land and water, and reports are forwarded to a Pollution Response Coordinator for investigation and follow-up.
You can also contact the appropriate DEQ Regional Office. DEQ's regional offices handle most pollution investigations and enforcement activities. Virginia DEQ

In North Carolina
For an environmental emergency or spill:

Call the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) 24-hour Environmental Emergency number: 800-858-0368. This is the number to use after hours, on weekends and holidays for environmental emergencies, including spills and releases.
Call 911 when immediate emergency response or first responders are needed.
For non-emergency environmental concerns:

Contact your local NCDEQ Regional Office during business hours. Regional staff investigate environmental complaints and incidents in their areas.
