Annual Celebration At Eden City Hall, Eden, NC

You and your family and friends are invited to the Eighteenth Annual Celebration of the Dan River Basin Association (DRBA), beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7 in the Council Room of the Eden City Hall, 308 East Stadium Drive, Eden, NC (36.5012, -79.7354).

Beginning with ample refreshments and a variety of displays, the celebration will feature a presentation by Eden City staff Cindy Adams and Mike Dougherty on the current and future improvements in outdoor recreation assets in Eden, many of which have been developed in partnership with DRBA.

The event, free and open to the public, will include highlights of DRBA’s accomplishments in 2019; a preview of the organization’s 2020 activities; and a short business session that includes recognition of extraordinary volunteer service and election of board members.

After lunch an easy guided out-and-back hike on the one-mile Matrimony Creek Trail will be offered.

The day’s activities will reflect DRBA’s mission—preserving and promoting the region’s rivers and culture through education, recreation, stewardship, and regional identity. Encompassing portions of sixteen counties in Virginia and North Carolina in its 3300-square-mile watershed, the Dan River Basin includes six rivers—the Mayo, Smith, Sandy, Banister, Hyco and, of course, the Dan. DRBA was formed in 2002 to preserve and promote the region’s abundant natural and cultural resources. Recognizing that this beautiful area shares a history of reliance on the rivers for drinking water, transportation, commerce, and industry, DRBA provides a unified vision of cooperation across geographic and political boundaries and fosters environmentally sound, sustainable economic development.

DRBA’s charter members may recall that the first public meeting of the organization occurred in January, 2002 in Eden City Hall. Participating in DRBA’s amazing growth and impact over the past eighteen years has been highly gratifying to those visionary citizens.

With preservation of the rivers at the heart of DRBA’s focus, work continues to preserve and promote the natural resources of the basin. DRBA staff members, including Executive Director Tiffany Haworth and program managers from both Virginia and North Carolina, will report on DRBA’s many activities throughout the past year, as well as provide a glimpse of opportunities planned for the year ahead.

At the conclusion of the meeting, lunch may be enjoyed at any of several restaurants in Eden. Attendees who wish may bring a lunch to eat on-site.

After lunch, all who wish will convene at the designated starting place to begin the hike on the Matrimony Creek Trail. Those joining the hike should dress accordingly and be prepared to sign a waiver.
