Aug FSO Paddle on the Dan

August 2, 2025
9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Please join us on Saturday, August 2, 2025 for an approximate 6-mile paddle on the Dan River from a private access near the NC Hwy 89 bridge over the Dan to the Hanging Rock State Park canoe access off Flinchum Road (GPS coordinates: 36.4299, -80.2482).  Participants will meet at the put-in at 9:00 a.m. to unload boats and set the shuttle.  The put-in is located off of Lynchburg Rd just south of the bridge over Big Creek (GPS Coordinates: 36.4472, -80.2860).  This paddle is suitable for most skill levels with some Class I and II rapids. Outings and meetings of the Dan River Basin Association are open to the public without charge.

Several tributaries feed into the Dan River along this stretch. Early in the journey, North and South Double Creeks enter from river right, followed by Cascade Creek about two miles into the float, also on river right. Cascade Creek originates in Hanging Rock State Park, where a couple of scenic waterfalls can be reached by hiking trails within the park. Nearby, you'll also find Moore’s Spring—a natural spring discovered in the mid-1800s that became the focal point of a popular resort in the early 1900s. Beyond the confluence with Cascade Creek, paddlers will encounter a series of striking rock cliffs and bluffs lining the river over the next several miles.  After the float, please join us at the Green Heron Ale House (1110 Flinchum Rd, Danbury, NC) to celebrate the Dan River Weekend.

Participants must supply their own boat, paddles, life jackets, water and lunch. Please wear water-shedding artificial fabric or wool (cotton or denim is not recommended); and provide a back-up change of clothing. In order to participate with the DRBA group on this outing, all participants will be required to sign a waiver.
